William R. Hayes, Sr. 78 of Norwood passed away Thursday April 28, 2022 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 7, 1943 in Philadelphia to the late Russell J. & Margaret (Elliott) Hayes.
William grew up in Philadelphia and attended John Bartram High School. From there, he enlisted into the United States Army where he served as a Private First Class. He followed his active duty with an extended service time in the Reserves. After his military service, William came home and began his career as a corrugator at Georgia Pacific as well as working at Penn Fruit and Air WIck. William was an avid Philadelphia fan. You could always find him enjoying a Budweiser, watching the Phillies or Eagles and being sure to tell the coaches exactly what they were doing incorrectly. More than anything, he loved his family and the time he spent living in Yeadon watching his children grow. Becoming a father and sharing his time with his family was his favorite part of life…until he became a grandfather. His grandkids were the light of his life and he made sure everyone knew that.
In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth S. (Harding) as well as his sisters Josephine, Margaret and Mary.
Survivors include: His children William R, Jr (Lauren), Elizabeth S. Hayes and Mary Ann Moore. His grandchildren Thomas P. Moore and Abigail E. Hayes and sister Anna Wise (Robert) as well as many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to: The American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org
