Robert “Bob” J. Bernauer Sr., 82, was called home by the lord on June 7, 2022. He passed away quietly at home surrounded by family. Bob was born in Philadelphia, PA to the late Gaston & Fay (nee McClain) Bernauer.
Bob will be remembered for his never quit attitude. In Bob’s own words, “I never gave up”. For those that knew Bob, this was in his nature. He was a true fighter, a hard worker, strong, courageous, loving, hard-nosed and at times stubborn. Bob always fought for what he thought was right, he was relentless.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Pat Bernauer; Children Lisa (Greg) Smith, Jackie (Chris) Spagna, Robert (Loraine) Bernauer Jr., Matthew and Michelle; Grandchildren Christopher, James Robert “JR”, Anastasia, Ian, Madison, Nathan, Victoria, Bobby, Bridget, Zac, Justin and Samantha.
For over 50 years, Bob proudly served Tinicum Township in multiple capacities. He was a Lifelong Member of Tinicum Township Fire Department, served as Tinicum Assistant Fire Marshall, served as Battalion Chief for one year with Tinicum Fire Company, Fire Chief of Lester Fire Department for over 30 years and a township employee for over 54 years. Bob started his employment within the township back in 1963, most recently as the Superintendent of the Wastewater Treatment Plant. In true Bob fashion, upon his retirement from the township in 2017, he went back to work. The day after retiring, he took a position with Delcora, overseeing, what else but the operation of the Tinicum Township Wastewater Treatment Plant. He loved Tinicum Township. He often stated, “I was born in Tinicum, I’ll die in Tinicum”.
When not working, Bob loved to travel and fix/build things around the house (his and his son in law’s). Bob and Pat enjoyed their time on the beaches of the Outer Banks, flying to Hawaii, a cruise to Alaska, Winter Carnival in Canada, and many trips to Disney World with the grandkids. He worked for the company that built his home back in, where else but in Tinicum.
In his earlier days, Bob enjoyed fishing, working on cars, bowling (red, white, and blue ball and shoes) and spending time with the members of the firehouse.
Toby Keith may have sung it, but Bob was truly “proud to be an American”.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Sunday, June 12, 2022, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and again on Monday, June 13, 2022, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Cavanagh Family Funeral Home, Norwood.
