Mary Dolores Small (Thornton), aged 90, was reunited in eternal life with her loving husband of 54 years, Thomas N. Small, on July 16, 2021. She was known to her family and childhood friends as “Dolores” and called “Mary” by her coworkers and the friends she made later in life. This obituary is written with great love on behalf of her brother, Robert Thornton (Diane) of St. Augustine, FL, her sons, Gregory (Sandra) of Bucks County and Jeffrey (Amy) of Ridley Park, PA and her six grandchildren, Matthew, Mark, Brendan, Colin, Caitlin & Erin.
Mom was born and raised in S.W. Philadelphia and lived for more than 54 years in Ridley Township. Mom was a long-time parishioner of Our Lady of Peace Church and later St. Madeline’s Church. Mom was a long-time employee in Acme’s corporate offices before raising her family. When she returned to full-time work, she was employed for many years as a bookkeeper by the Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Chester until her retirement. For the last several years, Mom resided and was well cared for at St. Francis Care Center in Darby, PA.
If you knew Mom, it’s likely that you knew her as both a warm, caring and giving person as well as a woman of great faith, gentleness and humor. She was a great blessing to her family. The first in her family born in America, she was Irish Catholic in all the best ways. Mom had a loud, infectious laugh. In her retirement, she was active with the Ridley Park Senior Club. In addition to the beautiful devotion and love she had for her “one and only” Tom, Mom also loved to watch what her very young grandson called the “boring, black & white, old-lady, movie channels,” she loved ice cream and, most of all, she loved visits from her grandchildren. She even enjoyed marching in Ridley Park’s 4th of July parade multiple times with her grandkids. Until the very last day of her life, her family was complimented on her pleasant demeanor and smiling face by the staff at St. Francis.
Although she will be missed greatly by her family, we are comforted by the love she gave us, which was enough to last throughout our lifetimes.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral on Thursday after 9:30am in the church of St. Madeline, Ridley Park followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30am. Int. SS. Peter & Paul Cem. Friends are invited to attend her visitation Wednesday 6-8 pm at the Cavanagh Family Funeral Home, 301 Chester PIke, Norwood.
