With our deepest sympathy, we are acknowledging the passing of our beloved Carmen “Maria” Ruiz, who resided in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia, PA. Maria recently departed on August 31, 2021, at the tender age of 89 due to health-related complications.
Maria was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico on August 4, 1932, to Jose Roman and Julia Matos. Maria moved to Philadelphia with her husband to create a better life for her family.
She was a homemaker and devoted housewife, raising 10 children and several of her grandchildren. She was very involved with her Catholic Faith and was a member of the Legion of Mary. She loved to cook, spend time in her garden, stitch and read the bible. Maria loved her God and Savior Jesus Christ and honored the Lord daily in everything that she did.
Maria was preceded in death by her loving husband Antonio Ruiz and her children Luis Ruiz, Elizabeth Aponte, Fernando Ruiz, Joseph Ruiz, and daughter-in-law Margie Galdo. Also, by her grandson Anthony Lopez. She is survived by her daughter Marta Roman and her husband Luis Roman; Benedicto Ruiz, Margie Fischer and her husband Bernard Fischer; Stanley Ruiz, Kathy Ruiz, Migdalia Ruiz; her daughter-in-law Rachel Ruiz and son-in-law Ralph Aponte, Sr.
Maria also leaves behind many grandchildren along with their spouses; great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Maria will be remembered and her presence will be forever missed by her family.
Maria received 24/7 care provided by her daughter Kathleen Ruiz (caretaker) and grand-daughter Katrina Ruiz for years leading up to her hospitalization and eventually death.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Saturday, September 4, 2021, from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. in St. Peter the Apostle Church,5th and Girard Ave, Philadelphia, PA. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA.
