Joseph Kevin Matlack
Joseph Kevin Matlack of Holmes, PA, passed away unexpectedly on September 9, 2022. He was only 66 years old. A friend to everyone, Joe was born to Walter and Helen Matlack, and raised in Upper Darby, PA.
After a very short stint at Monsignor Bonner High School resulted in one too many JUGs (judgment under God), Joe graduated from Upper Darby High School, and soon began his career at Bell Atlantic (now Verizon). A proud member of CWA Local 13000, he spent his entire career at Verizon, gaining too many friends to count and telling more stories than can be written.
Joe was fun. He loved to cook, he loved his dogs (but not the cat), traveling, watching Eagles football, and was a devoted fan of Villanova basketball. But more than anything else, Joe loved his family. As a young man, he played softball for the Bungalow Inn, and there made friends with teammates the Quinn brothers, and soon fell for their little sister, Cathy. In 1987 he took her on a date to see the movie “La Bamba” and after surviving years of teasing from the family, Joe married Cathy in 1990. His heart grew ten times bigger when their son Joe was born in 1997.
Joe was a storyteller. He never knew a stranger and would always make you feel welcome, whether in his home or at the local watering hole. He would do anything for a laugh and had the biggest heart.
Together, Joe and Cathy dreamed of owning a house at the beach, and that dream came true after retirement. He loved his house on the bay in Ocean City, Maryland, where he made even more friends while sitting on the deck of his house and on the barstools of the beachside bars. “Joe was at Kirby’s Pub” became a regular update on his Facebook page. Joe was larger than life, and will be missed by all who knew him.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Catherine (Quinn), his son Joseph, and sister Linda Prinz (Kenneth). He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and extended family that will miss him dearly.
A celebration of life is being held for Joe on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at the Cavanagh Family Funeral Home, 301 Chester Pike, Norwood, PA 19074. Visitation will be from 9:00 – 11:00 am and the Service will be at 11:00 am, followed by interment at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Springfield, PA.
Joe was an organ donor who would have been happy to know his 20/20 vision is now helping two other people to see. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Joe’s name to The Gift of Life Donor Program (https://www.donors1.org/give-to-gift-of-life/).
