Ferdinando Martino 86 (Fred), of Essington, PA passed away peacefully on the morning of February 18, 2021 after lengthy illnesses.
Born in Serino, Italy on June 19, 1934 to Liberato & Giuseppina (Rodia), Fred immigrated to Philadelphia, PA in 1955.
In the next few years he met then married Florence Maffei in 1960 and settled in Essington, PA.
During his life he worked many jobs, including the former General Electric plant in Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Airport.
In the 1970’s until the early 1980’s, he also owned and operated Martino Water Ice, selling water ice and pretzels to the residents of Tinicum Township.
Also at this time Fred worked for a local heating oil company. Shortly after he started Martino Fuel in 1977, and remained the owner until 2003.
After retirement, he enjoyed cooking and gardening, and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Predeceased by his oldest son Ferdinand, and his brothers Rafaelle (Ralph) Martino, Pellgrino (Pete) Martino, and Armando Martino.
Fred is survived by his wife Florence (Maffei) Martino, his sons Stephen Martino (Debra), Robert Martino (Michele), his daughters Christine (David) Martin, and AnnMarie Martino. Also survived by his 8 grandchildren-Bob, Nick, Marissa & Jenna Martino, Anthony & Brandon Martino, and John & Matthew Martin. Also survived by his brother Joseph Martino (Dorotea) of Philadelphia.
Funeral Mass will be at Saint George’s Catholic Church 22 E. Cooke Ave. Glenolden, PA 19036 https://www.stgeorgeparish.org/ on February 25, 2021 at 10:00 am, followed by burial at Ss. Due to strict Covid 19 restrictions, there will be no viewing before the church services.
If you wish to send flowers, please send them to Cavanagh Funeral Home 301 Chester Pike Norwood, PA 19074 by Wednesday before 4 PM and the funeral home will deliver the flowers to the cemetery for the burial service.
